We have only had two months of 2011 so far but already we have had a large amount of announcements and releases that should keep mobile phone fans excited for the next 10 months of the year. One of the biggest announcements made so far came last months from Nokia, the world’s biggest selling mobile phone manufacturer.
The Finnish company revealed that they would be switching their allegiance from the Symbian operating system, which their smartphones, including the relatively successful Nokia ̔, have previously been run, to the Windows phone OS.
Nokia, despite still having the largest market share in the business, have struggled recently and to an extent, especially in the mobile phone market, so have Microsoft so it seems as if the two companies are hoping that this partnership will be mutually beneficial and return them to their previous place at the top of the technology market. Their partnership with Symbian will continue but it seems that from now on their key handsets, and the phones to replace the N8, will be run on Microsoft developed systems.
There have been questions about the partnership though with many feeling that it is a far better deal for Microsoft than it is for Nokia. The main question on everybody’s lips though is; when will we see the first Nokia/Microsoft phone released. All that has been revealed so far have been some renderings of hardware that could possibly the basis of a new Windows phone for Nokia and we could be waiting another year for previews.
It is understandable that many are shocked about Nokia’s decision to go in a totally new direction rather than build on the decent showing of the Nokia N8, the phone has great hardware and its use of Symbian is the best yet. What is clear though is that these two companies can rely on a huge amount of loyal customers who will be extremely excited that they have joined forces. Fingers are being crossed that the venture is as successful as it should be.
